Woman adopts 'cranky' senior dog so he could live his best life

I’m a huge advocate for taking a chance on a senior rescue dog, but Sgt Pepper, aka The Sarge has taught me about the resilience of seniors in a whole new way. Sarge was found walking the streets of Los Angeles last summer, deaf and blind, and in really tough shape. He was estimated to be around 19 years old at the time.

With the help of True & Faithful Pet Rescue Mission, Sarge joined our Jem and the Misfits family. I honestly didn’t think he would make it very long. I have had other special needs pets, but something about him being blind and deaf and so fragile really intimidated me. But Sarge has been sure to let me know exactly what he needs every step of the way. He quickly learned to trust me. And it felt so good to get him feeling better.

He does not hesitate to bark orders at me. I like to joke that I am his personal service, seeing-eye human. He is funny, fearless, demanding, and often cranky, but how can you resist his cute face. When his kidney and disc disease worsened back in April, and he stopped walking on his own, I braced my heart for his final decline.

But Sarge was not giving up. He used a wheelchair for a while, but preferred to have me close by at all times, holding him up. And miraculously, after six months of carrying him, Sarge started walking on his own again. He is a medical mystery. More than any other dog I have rescued, Sarge has been my biggest surprise. Every day, he proves our favorite saying, that old is the new new.
