Inspiring rescue story of a pig - Pickles

We rescued Pickles off of a flooded farm when he was just a little piglet and we brought him home and we instantly fell in love with him. So shortly after we adopted Pickles, we traveled with him to New York City, actually, you know, as one does with their pig. And while we were staying at an Airbnb, he accidentally ingested rat poison that had been placed under the fridge or in a closet. As soon as we landed home, he became very ill and the vet told me he had six hours left to live. So I panicked and was determined to come up with a solution. So I asked the vet, if I can bring you a pig, could you do a blood transfusion? And the vet said, yeah, let’s give it a try. I had six hours to find a pig. 

I found a butcher on Craigslist who was selling his 450-pound pig. I called him and begged him to let me borrow her for this blood transfusion. And he agreed. He had lost his dog a few years ago due to rat poison. He offered to let me have the pig. But the only problem was he didn’t have a way to transport her. He was like, my neighbor took my trailer and I don’t know where my neighbor is or where, when he’s getting back. So I was like, okay, well, can I bring her in my SUV? 

So I went back on Craigslist and I found a transporter to bring her from the farm to UC Davis. So I got all of that done. We were an hour over the estimated time limit, but (the vet) saved his life. And you should’ve seen my vet’s face when she saw how big this pig was. And she was like, oh my gosh, I’m going to have to bleed this big. But sure enough, this pig saved Pickles his life. 

And so we named her Tickles and she was lying in the stall next to Pickles. And she was just so gentle. We were feeding her raspberries out of the palm of our hand. And I just turned to Steven, my fiancé and said, you know, we got to save Tickles. She saved Pickles. And so I called the butcher, made the weirdest purchase I ever made in my life and bought myself a now 880-pound pig. I found a forever home for her. She now lives on a sanctuary in Napa called Flat Broke Farm. And we go and we visit her all the time. She’s doing very well. And I wrote a children’s book about it called How Tickles Saved Pickles.

He quickly learned his name. He would come running when you’d call him, he would do 360s. He would play a little kitty piano. We taught him how to paint and surf on a surfboard. And it was just so amazing to see how quickly he learned things. And I realized pigs actually have the intelligence of a three-year-old child. So they’re one of the smartest animals. They’re smarter than dogs. And I registered him as a therapy pet, or a therapig as we like to call him. So he would visit classrooms and retirement homes and just make people happy everywhere he went. And I always love watching people’s reactions when they see a pig come trotting pie on a leash. And shortly after getting Pickles, we decided to get him a friend. So we got Dill. And they are the best of friends. They cuddle together. They love to snack together. They dress up together. They go for cards together. We travel with both of them. Pickles has stayed in all sorts of hotels everywhere. 

And I think people have really just fallen in love with their friendship and the fact that, you know, we don’t treat pickles any differently to us. He’s you know, he’s no different than a dog. And It’s just been really amazing to get to share our adventures with him, with everybody on the internet and just see people fall in love with him in the way that we love him.
