The Triumph of the Turbojet:
In the 21st century boarding an aircraft and flying from one place to another is an everyday feature of a highly mobile society. But only eighty or so years ago that is something no-one could have imagined. It took two ingenious inventors to revolutionize aviation: Englishman Frank Whittle and German engineer Hans-Joachim Pabst von Ohain. Researching independently of each other, in the 1920s and 1930s they developed a new kind of propulsion: a special kind of turbine which sucked in air, compressed it, and expelled it again with hot combustion gases under high pressure.
