On June 3, 1998, a high-speed ICE (InterCity Express) train traveling at 200 KM (124 mph) derailed and crashed into an overhead concrete bridge pillar near the town of Eschede in Northern Germany. It was the worst rail disaster in the history of Germany and the worst high-speed train crash ever recorded.
