Wuhan Pool Party: Water Park Festival Footage Sparks Online Backlash

Videos of a massive pool packed with thousands of revellers in Wuhan at the HOHA Electronic Music Festival sparked outrage around the world, as many countries are still dealing with the deadly pandemic.

Wuhan is the Chinese city where the first official coronavirus case was registered in January 2020. The city went under lockdown on the 23rd of January for 11 weeks, and it hasn’t registered any new cases of the virus since mid-May. According to the city’s health authorities, a total of 9.9 million people have been tested in Wuhan - almost the entire population - as of June 1st. They found just 300 positive cases, all without symptoms, and traced a further 1,174 who’ve been in close contact with these people.

The pool party footage, taken by an attendee on the 3rd of August, shows crowds in the pool, with no social distancing in place and no masks.

However, the entry requirements were strict: partygoers had to reserve their tickets in advance and had to present their “health code” - generated from a mobile app that tracks people’s movements – on arrival.
