Hundreds took to the streets of Taiz on Monday, to protest the collapse of the local currency and denounce the deteriorating economic and living conditions.
Reports claim security forces fired live bullets to disperse demonstrators who blocked the streets, resulting in injuries.
Footage shows smoke rising from burning tyres in a number of the city’s streets, causing a complete halt to traffic, as well as demonstrators chanting slogans demanding the dismissal of the government and the appointment of a new competent government.
“Of course we went out today to march for those who are hungry of our citizen. The dollar has become 1,200 [Yemeni Riyals] and the Saudi [Riyal] has become 350 and the Russian [Ruble] has become 50 Riyals, where do we go, the army is beating citizens and so far one person has been killed.”
According to media reports, most of the shops closed their doors as part of a comprehensive strike plan to support the popular protests against the collapse of the Yemeni currency against foreign currencies.

SOT, Local resident (Arabic): “Of course we went out today to march for those who are hungry of our citizen. The dollar has become 1200 [Yemeni Riyals] and the Saudi [Riyal] has become 350 and the Russian [Ruble] has become 50 Riyals, where do we go, the army is beating citizens and so far one person has been killed.”

SOT,Local resident (Arabic): “Today, Taiz is experiencing a volcanic revolution and rage in protest against the deteriorating living and economic conditions, and against the rise of the dollar. The crazy rise exceeded 1200 riyals. Since the coalition’s intervention in Yemen, the dollar has been at 200 riyals, and the dollar rises as the (Arab) coalition increases control over the ports and Yemeni islands.”
