Trapped in Time at Kiriwina! Jan 26, 2017 The Trobriand Islands are part of Papua New Guinea, but this is officially known as the Kiriwina Islands. Found in the archipelago of eastern New Guinea, these islands cover 175 square miles and are home to one of the world’s most untouched, intact island cultures. The total population of 12,000; the language is Kilivila; the government is a monarchy; and the currency is the Kina. In addition to white sand beaches, an amazing attraction is the islanders’ body decoration. Locals spend hours weaving blossoms& grasses, seashells ad tortoise shells, metal bits and leather strips, beads and stones and pig’s jawbones into their garments. They also paint their faces and thread feathers and garlands into their hair. The tribe we visited is run by the females – maybe that is why they take so much time decorating themselves!
