It’s why they wanted her dead. 2: Jacqueline Cochran / Aviator The first woman to fly a bomber across the Atlantic, Cochran led the WASP training program. 3: Sophie Scholl / German Dissident Scholl was hung for distributing flyers calling for Germans to fight back against the Nazis. 4: Susan Travers: French Foreign Legion Soldier The only woman in the French Foreign Legion, Travers led an escape that saved 2,500 lives. 5: Faye Schulman / Partisan Fighter Schulman fought back using her camera, capturing iconic images of life in the resistance. 6&7: Francis Eliza Wills and Harriet Ida Pickens: Naval Officers As the first black women in the segregated US Navy, these two fought both Nazis & racism. 8: Veronica Lake / Actor/ Icon Long hair was unsafe for women in wartime factories so Lake cut hers, starting a safer short hair trend. 9: Gertrude Boyarski / Partisan Fighter Seeking justice for her murdered family, Boyarski burned down a German supply route bridge. 10: Nancy Wake / Allied Spy Wake was feared for her penchant for killing Nazis while helping POWs in their escape efforts. 11: Nadezhda Popova: Bomber Pilot A member of the Soviet’s ‘Night Witches’ squadron, Popova flew 852 bombing runs. 12: Hedy Lamarr: Inventor/Actor Lamarr co-invented a way to prevent enemy ships from jamming American torpedo signals. 13: Violette Szabo / Allied Spy Before her execution by the Germans, Szabo raised hell obliterating Nazi targets in France. 14: Veronica Foster / Factory Worker Veronica ‘Ronnie, the Bren Gun Girl’ Foster inspired women working in wartime factories. 15: Lyudmila Pavlichenko: Soviet Sniper Her 309 recorded kills fighting the Nazis in the USSR is the most of any woman in history.
