1915 Metz Touring Car

Recorded on July 2, 2011 at Waltham, Massachusetts, where the Metz car was manufactured from 1909 until 1922. Here we see a 1915 Metz touring car starting and driving. These are "friction drive" cars, meaning there is no transmission gearing, just a paper friction wheel running on an aluminum disc. For light cars like these, it was an effective system. Today, you'll find snowblowers, well drilling equipment and other machines using the same system.
