Two of the most popular ways to maintain health and fitness as an older adult is through classes and home exercises. Scientific research has shown that improving balance is key to decreasing risk of falling. But how does one choose a class that is likely to help improve balance? What types of activities should one do at home to improve balance? How can an instructor make their class good for balance and falls prevention? What are the ‘keys’? To answer these questions, the Dane County Falls Prevention Task Force in Wisconsin identified evidence-based criteria for the types of activities shown to improve balance. These are ‘The Keys to Better Balance’! These ‘keys’ are a) static balance activities, b) dynamic balance activities, c) dynamic gait training, and d) dual-task training. ‘The Keys to Better Balance’ have been made into easy-to-use documents with video examples of these activities. along with Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
