www.dcfencing.com The Captain Steere Open at DC Fencers Club is a three-weapon tournament held yearly at DC Fencers Club. The tournament honors Captain Richard Steere, a retired Navy Captain who served as meteorologist for General George S. Patton during the Anglo-American landing in North Africa in 1942, and later predicted weather patterns for the invasion of Normandy, France (also known as "D-Day"). While at the Naval Academy, Captain Steere was on a fencing team, and after his graduation in 1931, he earned a spot on the U.S. Men's Foil Team which won bronze at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Before and after his retirement from the Navy in 1961, he was a fixture at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, where he fenced with and taught young midshipmen. Fit and compact, he fenced into his late 70s and won various titles of the Amateur Fencers League of America, which became the United States Fencing Assn. With his eyesight failing, his last recorded tournament victory was in 1989. He passed away in 2001. (the above is abridged from a March 2001 Washington Post obituary). # # # Congratulations to all the fencers who competed in The Captain Steere Open, a three-weapon tournament held at DC Fencers Club on May 18-19, 2013.
