?5th Generation Traditional Japanese Barber in Tokyo | Relaxing Hair Wash, Head Massage, & Wet Shave

In Tokyo, Japan we filmed with a fifth-generation barber and proprietor named Ms. Chiyo Funakoshi. The family’s Kitadoko Barbershop, 喜多床五代目 舩越千代. has a very rich history and was established in 1871. That same year the Japanese government allowed the men with status to no longer have a traditional topknot and they were also permitted to not carry their swords. Sixty percent of Tokyo’s male population no longer wore their hair in the traditional style by 1876. Back then the barbershop was located across the street from a university which is now the University of Tokyo. The shop became very well known and had 18 chairs and 20 staff members. Since opening, the shop has moved a couple times and it is now located downstairs in a modern building. In 1990, Chiyo began working at the barbershop alongside her dad. She is the first woman in the family to run the business. Her dad who is 83 years old still comes to the shop every week and while we were filming he was helping out ?
