7 things you need to know about Hatred's Adult Only rating

The American Entertainment Software Rating Board has given the upcoming third person action game Hatred an Adult Only rating. Thanks to this rating the game will very likely not be sold in stores and perhaps not even in online stores. Here are seven things you need to know about Hatred's Adult Only rating 1. Adult Only is 18+ The ESRB gives the Adult Only rating to games that show content suitable for adults age 18 and up only. This is different from the regular Mature rating, which is for 17 years and up. An AO rated game may include prolonged scenes of intense violence, graphic sexual content and/or gambling with real currency. 2. The context The ESRB gives ratings within a context of modern society. Which means that the rating board does not only measure elements like violence, sex and drug use in games, but above all the context in which the game takes place. With school shootings in the States and an attack on a satirical magazine in Paris, it's likely the context of Hatred that got it an AO rating. In the game you have to shoot as many innocent people as you can before killing yourself. 3. Second game ever Hatred is the second game ever to get an Adult Only rating based on graphic violence, after the later cancelled Playstation game Thrill Kill. All other games, like Manhunt 2 for example, got this rating based on descriptions like 'Blood and Gore', 'Intense Violence', 'Strong Language', 'Use of Drugs' and 'Strong Sexual Content'. In all cases it was sexual content or nudity that gave the game or app the final push to get an Adult Only rating. 4. Other AO games Other games that have gotten an AO rating at some point are for example GTA San Andreas, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude – Uncut and Uncensored, Singles, Playboy The Mansion: Private Party and Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy – Director's Cut. 5. PC only In general AO rated games are only released on PC. Console manufacturers Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft don't offer a license for the publication of this type of content to developers. It's therefore very likely Hatred will remain a PC only game. 6. It will stay uncensored Polish game studio Destructive Creations has no plans on censoring its game. The developers belief the fans should get the game that's being promised. According to them censoring the game to get it onto consoles would not be in the interest of their fans. 7. Australia refuses The Australian OFLC refused to give a rating to Hatred, basically banning the game from Australian stores that way. The European institute for game ratings PEGI has not published its rating yet.
