A tour of St. Joseph’s Mental Health Care Home in India

My daughter Heather and I met with Fr. John in his office and from there he took us on a tour of St. Joseph’s Mental Health Care Home. We saw the campus where there are two separate dormitory buildings for the 20 men and 110 women who are being rehabilitated there. Patients are poor persons from families, from government mental hospitals and from street corners brought by the police department. All suffer from chronic mental illnesses. The goals are to increase the stability of living, and empower self-reliance in all respects. To that end, vocational training, psychotherapy, occupational therapy. At the end of our tour we came to where the residents were gathered in the large hall. As I passed out treats for the residents, they were delighted and some responded by serenading us with their heartfelt songs. We shared fond farewells with Fr.
