Playback singer Babul Supriyo is a BJP Candidate from Asansol in West Bengal for the 16th Lok Sabha election, 2014. Babul rose to fame in the early 1990s as an artist. Hailing from a prestigious musical family in West Bengal, Babul is the grandson of composer - Banikanth N. C. Baral. He is a commerce graduate but left a career in banking to pursue his dream of having an 'off-beat' career. He works in Bollywood as well as in the Bengali cinema, he also has worked as a playback singer in several Oriya films including in many Indian languages. The Asansol constituency is currently represented by Bansa Gopal Chowdhury of the CPI (M) who won the 2009 elections with a considerable margin. The constituency has primarily been run by representatives of the CPI (M).
