After close loss in Iowa, Bernie Sanders handily wins New Hampshire

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders handily won the New Hampshire primary Tuesday night. The self-described democratic socialist beat out Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in nearly every demographic, according to exit polls. Sanders had led in the state for months. Still, he needed to deliver on expectations after Clinton narrowly edged him out in the Iowa caucuses last week. In a speech to a cheering crowd at Concord High School, Sanders congratulated Clinton and her supporters and thanked his volunteers, reminding his crowd that no matter the final outcome, that Democrats must come together in November. Sanders quickly launched into the issue of inequality, a pillar of his campaign. “What the American people understand is that our great country was based on a simple principle, and that principle is fairness,” Sanders said. “Let me be very clear, it is not fair when we have more income and wealth inequality today than almost any major country on earth, and when the top one-tenth of 1 percent now owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent. That’s not fair.” "Together, we will create an economy for all of us, not just the 1 percent," Sanders said. Sanders has called for a political revolution, while Clinton has fashioned herself as a progressive who will get things done. The candidates will meet once again in Milwaukee at Thursday’s Democratic debate, moderated by the PBS NewsHour.
