ALBANIA: TIRANA: ANGRY CROWD STORM GOVERNMENT OFFICES

English/Nat An angry crowd stormed the offices of the Albanian government on Sunday, in a protest at the death of opposition leader Azem Hadjari Protestors created turmoil across Tirana - setting fire to cars and trading gunfire with police. Opposition leader Sali Berisha has urged his followers to remain calm until Monday's funeral. Hadjari was shot dead on Saturday in front of the opposition Democratic Party headquarters. Clouds of smoke from burning cars rose over the centre of this former Communist capital. But as the violence continued nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the assassination of Azem Hadjari. One protester was killed and four of the prime minister's guards were wounded as marchers and police engaged in violent clashes. Former Albanian President Sali Berisha appeared at his Democratic Party's headquarters on Sunday. He blamed Prime Minister Fatos Nano's Socialist Party for the killing and demanded his resignation or face the consequences. After Berisha issued his ultimatum, about 1,500 of his followers marched Sunday to the Interior Ministry, firing pistols in the air and pelting the building with stones. The crowd set fire to a ministry vehicle, then continued down the city's main street to the prime minister's office. Protesters opened fire at the third floor, which contains Nano's offices. Troops responded with volleys of gunfire over the protesters heads. But the protesters forced their way into the building, traded gunfire with the guards and set fire to the ground floor. Nano and his Cabinet fled out a side exit through the smoke and amid explosions of gas tanks of seven cars which the protesters had set on fire. Berisha was certain that Nano was behind the killing. Later, the Democratic Party called on Nano to resign by 1000gmt (1200 local time) Monday. The party also demanded the establishment of a "technical government" to prepare for new elections and to find Hadjari's killers.
