But who was the real Alexander Hamilton, and how did he rise from humble beginnings to become George Washington’s most important staff officer during the Revolutionary War, and later Secretary of the Treasury and leader of the first transition team from nothing to a fully functioning federal government? Hamilton’s famous reports (Report on the Public Credit, Report on the Bank, and Report on Manufactures) were the program for founding the national economy. Hamilton’s great antagonist Jefferson is being revealed as a spokesman for the southern slavery party, which wanted a weak and poor federal government unable to end slavery. Hamilton by contrast was an anti-slavery activist and abolitionist all his life. Hamilton’s American System of protectionism, mercantilism, and dirigism can help us put an end to the free trade sellouts, unemployment, and immiseration of our own time. We will attempt to convince the Left to adopt Hamilton as a champion of economic progress and as a figure whose ideas are worth pursuing in our time.
