Alla Gerber, a president, Holocaust Foundation; a member of the Public Chamber, talking about Khodorkovsky case.
It was for the first time I listened to a so lengthy speech of Khodorkovsky himself. For me personally there was a demonstration of fantastic intellectual job done. I listened to him and thought: "Lord, my God! What a terrific person is kept behind bars! What the brains! What a restrained, an intense mind! How does he cope with this stress? How it happens he has enough strength? After all, it will be seven years soon since he has been imprisoned. That is a job for a man in perfect condition, who, I beg your pardon, walks, runs, looks at those green leaves. And when does he work? Was it at night? Generally speaking, when does he have time to prepare for this hearing?
Most probably, many, many times, I would say now and again that I burn with shame looking at such a man sitting in this flask while he could be so useful to his country and people. And he wished to (be useful), thats the reason he is kept behind bars. If he preferred not to be imprisoned, he would not be, but would have been somewhere abroad long ago. What a shame that I can go out and see how beautiful a spring is while he has to continue his hard work.
