Here is my take on a small, pocket sized survival kit. It's pretty comprehensive in terms of fire, food, light, medical, tools, signaling, and small tools... but it will never be as useful as a full sized kit. It's a good supplemental kit though, that's for sure. Also easier to carry in case you have to hide your main pack, or you're simply going to be away from your main pack for a good portion of time (ie: hiking around base camp, scouting, recon, etc...) One thing I'm thinking about adding is a "Slim Rescue Howler" whistle by SOL. It's incredibly thin, and rectangular. Might attach it to the outside, top lid or something, so it's always handy, and you don't have to go digging inside to get to it.
