Amputee Sympathizes with Boston Marathon Victims

CAMDEN--More than a dozen people injured in the Boston bombings will have to learn to walk all over again. One Miami Valley farmer knows exactly what thy are going through.Springtime is always busy at La-Lyn Farms in Camden. Lynn Yost runs his family business.Most of the things I can do everyday.... there's a few things I let the boys do. And life goes on, it's kind of a miracle really, said Yost referring to him being here.Seven years ago, he lost most of his right leg in a silo on his farm, it got caught in the equipment.My cell phone was in my pocket... and I called for help right away and they shut things off... Just a lot of amazing miracles... I still believe if you put your trust in God, life goes on.He's been thinking of all the people who lost limbs in the bombing.You feel for them yeah. And when that whole thing happened, I could imagine spending the rest of my life in a wheelchair... but here I am walking.Yost learned to walk again on his prosthetic leg here at Dayton Artificial Limb.It's very much like the loss of a loved one... that's what they equate a limb loss to, said Luci Busch, a Prosthetist who also helps run the place.When they come in on crutches and then walk out carrying their crutches... it gives me a smile and they're smiling at the same time, said Michael Shelburne, a Prosthetist doing is residency there.Beyond helping people get physically back on their feet, they also help them mentally by hooking them up with someone who's gone thorugh such a traumatic experience.You can visually see them walking and you're like Wow, how can all that work? And the body's a wonderful thing how it adapts to these things, said Yost.He says the Boston victims will get through this, and he'll be thinking of them every step of the way.They're going to have to forgive those people with what happened. If you have vengeance, it will eat you alive and you'll never be able to get rid of it. just accept that that's your lot in life and life will go on. Depending on the victim, it could take weeks or months for the pain to subside. For others, it is a lot longer. Most take about a year to fully heal, and then begin on their new legs.
