More details visit: http://www.techtrixinfo.com/ How Clutch Works. Clutch is an integral component of a manual transmission vehicle. This part is helping the engine to smoothly engage with the transmission. It is a part of the transmission (gear box). Now in modern vehicles we can see clutches are been replaced with automatic transmission technology such as CVT, Torque converter etc. Components of clutch: 1. Pressure plate. 2. Diaphragm spring. 3. Clutch plate. Pressure plate: As shown in the figure pressure plate is the component with is supporting the clutch plate to engage with the engine. Diaphragm spring: As shown in the figure diaphragm spring is used to link the pressure plate firm to the clutch plate or when we exert the pressure on the clutch pedal this plate it pulling the pressure plate away so that the clutch plate can be de-linked from the engine. Clutch plate: This is the plate which is linking the engine with the clutch (see figure). Function of a clutch: It helps the engine to smoothly engage with the transmission. Lets see how it happens: If the engine drive is directly connected to the transmission, what happens is that, when we start a machine from a stop, the complete resistance from the machine (vehicle) tyre is acting on engine (due to mechanical linkage). So what a driver usually does is that, he steps on the clutch pedal to detach the engine from the gearbox (transmission) and slowly engages that. Thus the drive from the engine is slowly getting transmitted to transmission with out affecting the engine. Working of Clutch: Please have a look at above video before reading this for easy understanding. As we have explained earlier, the clutch is fixed between the engine and transmission (see the fig) and it is a part of the gearbox. The clutch is getting engaged to the flywheel. As we step on the clutch pedal the clutch is getting disengaged, as the clutch pedal is slowly released the clutch plate is getting engaged to the flywheel and thus the engine drive reached transmission and the rear wheels.
