HAUSU operates in a dimension of its own. Alternating between silent-movie inflected gags, giallo-style set-sequences and surrealism, it tells the story of a group of young girls who visit one of the girl’s aunt’s mysterious old home for the summer. While there they disturb some paranormal forces and before you know it there are psychedelic ghost cats and portraits that disgorge raging torrents of blood. And then the tone shifts and there’s more wacky fun. Obayashi has a masterful command of tone and the whole thing never goes off the rails. It’s a cohesive, truly adventurous work of film art.
