Roger M. Buergel is the Founding Director of Johann Jacobs Museum. Collaborating with artists and researchers from various parts of the globe, Buergel’s current aim is to systematize and extend the transcultural poetics that had largely informed documenta 12 (2007), for which he served as the Artistic Director.
The Artist as Curator raised a burning question that occupies a crucial position in a number of artists’ and curators’ professional identities. How can the methods, the stages of production or the concept of the exhibition used in a curator’s work in themselves also be tools of artistic expression? What does being an artist bring to curatorship? And, on the other hand, can a curator work like an artist, creatively, and what does that mean?
