According to an EU Observer report on Monday, Belarus could get a visa-free regime with the EU if it frees scores of political prisoners; senior officials from the Latvian EU presidency have said. The issue could even be discussed at an Eastern Partnership summit in May, if the prisoners are released before then. EU-Belarus relations have been strained for years, with the EU critiscising the authoritarian regime of president Alexander Lukanshenko, often dubbed "Europe's last dictator".
