As part of Campus Art Dubai 2014-15 Community programme, Yasser Elsheshtawy leads a talk on urbanism in Dubai. Dubai is infamously known as a city of spectacle, dominated by iconic buildings. For many it is a perfect example of a rapidly urbanizing center whose urban environment relies on a car centered paradigm. Its streetscapes are thus mostly experienced in passing and at a high speed. In this talk, Yasser Elsheshtawy shows a different side of the city that is less spectacular and more focused on the everyday experience of city dwellers. Based on extensive field research done over the last five years, detailed case studies of urban sites in the city’s lesser-known spaces will be highlighted, emphasizing a methodology that relies on slow-shutter speed photography and time-lapse video. About the speaker: Yasser Elsheshtawy is Associate Professor of Architecture at UAE University. He authored and edited a series of books including ‘Dubai: Behind an Urban Spectacle.’ His blog ‘dubaization.com’ has been hailed by The Guardian as one of the best city blogs in the world. He has been invited to lecture at numerous international venues including most recently Columbia University. About Campus Art Dubai: Campus Art Dubai is a school for artists, curators, writers and cultural producers based in the UAE. The course is taught and led by a local and international cast of academics, critics, curators and artists. Meetings occur over weekends and feature seminars, workshops, critiques and one-on-one mentorship.
