Canzona Quarti Toni 15 (Ricercar) - Giovanni Gabrieli (1557 - 1612)

As organist at St. Mark's in Venice Gabrieli was a member of the Ducal Chapel. And as a contemporary of Gabrielis' said "The musicians of St. Mark's are best seen not as servants of the church, but rather as being part of one of the most brilliant courts of Europe." Gabrieli's work in in large ceremonial and his motets are nearly all settings of parts of the liturgy used on the great Venetian festivals. This piece of music would have been used during the most solemn parts of the Mass, from the Canon to the Pater Noster. The images will be familiar to all Traditional Roman Catholics as being that of the true Catholic Mass abrogated by Pope Saint Pius V in 1570 at the Council of Trent when he issued the Quo Primum Bull.
