Classic Girl - Samantha Mathis - Jane's Addiction - Pump Up The Volume - 1990 - Allan Moyle

Whenever I feel like jumping off the plank and diving deep into an early teenage memory, I often find Jane's Addiction's 'Classic Girl' at the bottom of the ocean. In the nebulous wash of Dave Navarro's shimmering guitar, I wonder why only Perry appeared in the original video. Where was Dave, Eric, and Stephen?? What's perhaps incredible to realise now, is that 'Ritual de lo habitual' was released just "Three Days" before the U.S. theatrical release of Allan Moyle's teen masterpiece, 'Pump Up the Volume'. Ha! 'Ritual de lo habitual' - released August 21, 1990. 'Pump Up the Volume' - released August 24, 1990. The full-length soundtrack to 'Pump Up the Volume' is a brilliant "underground" salad of genres, stretching back to Richard Hell and The Descendants, and blending late 70's/early 80's punk with modern-day Leonard Cohen! But, as good as the soundtrack is, the officially released version misses many of the key songs from the film. Surely, Stan Ridgway's 'Talk Hard' SHOULD have been on the film soundtrack! BTW, you can find the "full" soundtrack; it's out there! Of course, Jane's Addiction don't even appear on the soundtrack, but that's beside the point: somehow, in some cosmic, unexplained way, both of these culturally important works of art need to be married together. They exist on the same page. Nora - through her clothing, style, and absolute beauty - seems to embody the convergence of "alternative/underground" culture, breaking into the mainstream before Grunge was even a generic, household word. In her breakout role, Nora (Samantha Mathis) is the real "Classic Girl" of 1990. Watch the film. Listen to the album. TALK HARD!
