One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has defended herself after calling the Closing the Gap program "complete rubbish" and arguing Australians "have had a gutful of the billion-dollar handouts with very little to show for it". "If you want to close the gap, start taking some responsibility for your own people," she said in her speech on Wednesday. "As the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. "We've provided the schools, it's now up to you to send your own kids to school." The One Nation leader defended her speech to Sky News host Paul Murray, saying if Indigenous Australians "want to close the gap, start taking some responsibility for your own people". "They don't need any more programs, they need to be held to account for the money that's been given to them, and if that program's not working, you don't get more money for it," she said. "I'm in fear for future generations and the division that's happening in this nation." Image: News Corp Australia
