David Bailey, one of the world's most distinguished and distinctive photographers was last night awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of East London. The iconic Bailey was recognised for his outstanding contribution to the arts and his long standing connection with the east end. Bailey, born in Leytonstone, has demonstrated his incredible creativity over the past five decades - it has made him a world renowned artist. Speaking at a star studded ceremony at the National Portrait Gallery, he said: "Coming from the east end and receiving this honour means a lot. It sends out a message to the kids in east London that anyone can do it - if you just persevere." Bailey has created incredible portraits of everybody from internationally recognised musicians, artists and actors to unknown headhunters in Nagaland, India and local tribes people in Papua New Guinea. He creates images using photography, film, painting and sculpture. The ceremony was held at the NPG where Bailey's landmark exhibition 'Stardust' is finishing its highly successful run.
