Day of Pink 2013 ASL Vlog

"Hello everyone! This is a vlog for the Day of Pink which usually happens every year in the second week of April. This year it is on Wednesday, April 10th. I'm going to take a moment here to explain more about how Day of Pink started and why we have this every year. Back in 2007, two boys who were grade 12 students at a high school in Nova Scotia had heard what happened when a younger boy in grade 9 decided to wear a pink shirt on his first day of school. When the younger boy arrived to school, he was bullied and harrassed by a group of other student. He was called names such as fag, fruit, or gay, because he was, well, wearing pink! The grade 12 students decided to take action and went to a nearby discount store and bought 50 pink t-shirts and tank tops and mass-emailed the whole school. They asked their friends, fellow students, and staff to show up the next day wearing pink as a sign of support against bullying. The response the next day was enormous! There was literally a sea of pink washing through the entire school. Some people were even wearing pink from head to toe! So when the Grade 9 boy walked in, he was so moved by their support and inspired by their action. Since then, Day of Pink has become internationally recognized! Many communities, people, and schools organize various events, workshops and projects. ORAD also has a couple of projects that speak to this topic. We have a vlog where Deaf queer folks share their experiences of bullying and how it has impacted their lives. In this vlog, hearing allies join them as well sharing their support. We are also having a poster made to increase the visibility of the Deaf queer community and show the Deaf queer youth that the community is out there! This poster gives them a chance to connect and see people they can relate to. We are very excited about these projects and can't wait to share them with you soon. So join us! Wednesday, April 10th to celebrate diversity and share in the message that discrimination, transphobia and homophobia must stop! On this day, a way to share that message, is to wear pink! Thank you!"
