Don’t Call Me Son

“Poignant and energetic ... a warmhearted study of genetics, gender and the true meaning of home.” – Hollywood Reporter
Like most 17-year-olds, cross-dressing working-class teen Pierre is exploring his identity. But his life is upturned when his mother is arrested: she stole him when he was newborn. Now, Pierre’s wealthy, conservative biological parents have tracked him down and he must contend with the comfortable but conservative new life they offer him, but also with the new identity they thrust on him.
In a fascinating casting decision, Daniela Nefussi impressively plays both Pierre’s mothers – almost unrecognisably. Following on from director Anna Muylaert’s The Second Mother (MIFF 15), this is a warm, lively and touching film investigating themes of gender fluidity, class, motherhood, adolescence and family.
