(DFUs): People with diabetes develop foot ulcers because of neuropathy, ischaemia or both. Foot ulcers with Peripheral neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease remain a serious and challenging complication of diabetes mellitus. There is an increased risk of lower extremity amputation from foot ulceration. Diabetics are also very prone to secondary infection of the ulcer (wound infection) and surrounding skin (cellulitis). Prevention, through identifying risk factors whenever possible, is an important element in the management of this complication.
