Guéckédou, in Guinea's Forestière region, is the epicenter of the West Africa Ebola epidemic that started in March 2014. The Guéckédou Ebola treatment center opened its doors to patients that month; since then, the capacity of the center has expanded from 20 to 40, to 80, to 110 beds. Teams have admitted more than 800 patients, 450 of whom tested positive to Ebola (150 of them survived). In July, case numbers appeared to decrease in Guinea, suggesting the end of the outbreak might be near. But now, at the beginning of October, MSF is caring for more than 120 patients – of whom 85 are confirmed to have the virus – in its two case management facilities in the country, Conakry and Guéckédou.
