Mercedes, sporting an 11-6-2 record but with Olympic experience and already hardened as a pro' (he fought Joey Olivo, Guty Espadas and Juan Diaz amongst others within that patchy looking ring record, and wasn't held back at all, brutal matchmaking) takes on lineal Flyweight champion Castillo, a former light flyweight champ' well known for brutally battering Luis Esteba. Castillo, who had fought a who's who of the lower weights, had beaten Colombian dangerman Prudencio Cardona to take the WBC title up at fly, and was making his first defence here. Mercedes puts on arguably the best showing we have of him on film here. However, like Avelar, Cardona and Castillo before him, Mercedes didn't keep the title for long.
