'Covert incest describes a relationship between a parent and child in which the child feels more like a romantic partner. Typically the parent is motivated by the loneliness and emptiness of a troubled marriage, so he or she turns the child into a surrogate partner. There is not necessarily any kind of overt sexual touching, but the relationship feels too close for comfort to the child. The boundaries are such that there is an incestuous feeling. The child feels used and trapped, the same as with overt incest.' - Kenneth Adams
This is a huge subject but I scratch the surface here with a very specific demographic in mind - young men between teenage and those under 50. I will be speaking more to issues that affect men in this 'strata', going forward in my commitment to adding my voice to discussions in the service of suicide prevention. This video, at under 15 mins made for social media, is naturally, full of gaps and straight-forward language. It is not an academic thesis. It's aim is to simply spark thoughts and facilitate movement and possibly the beginning of change, where some men may have felt confused about some of the effects of this pernicious phenomenon.
