I pitched this story idea "Outward Bound for Incest Survivors” to producers at the CBS Early Show. I received the honor to work with correspondent Hattie Kauffman, a tremendously gifted and caring Native American broadcast journalist to tell the story. After the story aired, Kim contacted me. She is the young woman on the side of the mountain- on ropes. Kim confided to me how the broadcast on EVE, Ending Violence Effectively, changed her life. She went on to say that I, Suzanne Chandler, had given her life back to her by shooting her story. I could not speak. READ THAT AGAIN if you doubt the power of media. Kim said that by seeing herself on that rock face, on NATIONAL TV, she NO LONGER HAD TO FEEL ASHAMED. Similar responses to my work - and the power of visual communication specifically - has fed my desire for filmmaking for decades. Sharing these kinds of positive outcomes to anyone interested in using still or motion photography and video production for INSPIRATION and hope has been a part of me for as long as I can remember. There is so much good we can do as a result of the ease and affordability of today’s digital acquisition and distribution technology. USE the technology. Drop me a message for any location production questions you have. No questions are too small if it means one more Kim feels hope or happiness in their lives, right? Location production note: At this time in my career, I did not own a broadcast camera and rented one for this story for just under 600 dollars/day. We were camped out with the outward bound group for three days, two nights. I asked a girlfriend, Julie Kramer, to run audio and help with the gear. Julie was a high school science educator at the time. She did a wonderful job. Keep in mind what it means to prepare for stories like this: Since we were camping out, with no access to power, I had to estimate the number of tapes and charged batteries we would need on location for three days to tell the story. I enjoy everything about storytelling from pitching the idea to get the story told and broadcast, to how to prepare for the production itself. I am always thrilled to offer clients and film- journalism students my thoughts /solutions on their challenges for stories THEY want to share. With over three decades in this field, capturing visuals, sound plus interviewing people such as the women here who have suffered greatly, I have plenty of experience to draw from to help whatever production question you have to share a story THAT MATTERS to YOU to make a difference in the lives of others.
