Riot police running in street STORYLINE: Munich police arrested 10 people Saturday while a popular downtown beer hall was wrecked as tension between fans escalated just hours before kickoff for a key world cup qualifying match between England and Germany. A street near the train station was also closed after 100 police officers broke up fighting between numerous German and English fans, hundreds of which had gathered to drink and sing at a pub there. Munich police spokeswoman Andrea Hartenberger said "It was a lot of people involved, but we don't have any hard figures yet. But the mood in the city is getting noticeably more aggressive." Three fans were injured - being hit by thrown glasses and chairs - as 50 rowdies from the two countries tangled at the Augustiner Bierhalle, a well-known beer hall in the downtown shopping district. A few hours earlier, 40 fans vandalized a room in the beer hall, smashing windows, table and chairs before fleeing before police arrived. Munich police spokesman Albert Lachner said it was difficult how many hooligans are in Munich, but added "we expect about 1-thousand English hooligans and 1-thousand German hooligans." He said of the fans "It's clear they're pretty drunk and getting more aggressive." Munich police had arrested just five English fans and one German for fighting before noontime Saturday, but many hooligans streamed into the town during the day after 450 Germans and 150 English clashed in Frankfurt Friday night, leading to 35 arrests. German and English hooligans are among Europe's most notorious, with a long history of violence, including fighting at Charleroi, Belgium, during the 2000 European Championship. Munich has assembled 1-thousand 100 police officer and border control officers to handle the German fans, and what's expected to be around 10-thousand people arriving from Britain for the key World Cup qualifier.
