Fabrizio Paterlini - En la Noche II

"Some associate the music of Mantua-born Fabrizio Paterlini with movie soundtracks. Other regard it the purest imaginable variation of the fashionable Neo-Classical movement. And then there are those, who feel he is taking the romantic tradition of the piano-composer into the new millennium. All, however, seem to agree that whatever label one eventually decides to apply to it, his music is foremost imbued with one of the most sought-after qualities: Beauty. Paterlini's touch is weightless and sensitive, after all, his tone cool yet intense, his timbres capable of expressing the entire scale of human emotion. His compositions, too, are of a disarming immediacy, a feat which has become rare: You don't get to hear pieces relying all but exclusively on the striking relationship between a captivating melody and a heartfelt harmonic progression all that often anymore. Instead, even some of his more famous colleagues have instead reverted to a kind of sterilised minimalism, in which there is barely space for lyricism and to a musical vocabulary restricted to a narrow tonal and harmonic range. Paterlini, meanwhile, has long left his fears behind him. Rather than questioning his aesthetic judgements, he is simply following his instinct, pleased to be compared to his renowned compatriot Ludovico Einaudi and happy to be associated with a wide variety of genres. In the case of his latest full-length, Fragments Found, this dauntless attitude has resulted in a work bridging the gap between the classical and the contemporary, Ambient and Pop, the spiritual and the earthly as well as the private and the universal. Everything is about playing the right note at the right time here, about knowing exactly what you want to do and only realising the ideas you are capable of realising. Of course, Fragments Found, is also about beauty – although Paterlini may have his own ideas with regards to that term. „Beauty“ is one of those terms that keeps popping up in press releases and reviews, yet no one really seems to be able to define what it means in relation to music. Beauty lies in simple things. As I am constantly trying to evolve as a human being, it gets clearer and clearer in my mind that finding beauty means leaving the useless behind and focus on simple, real things. As you get closer to this objective, you discover „beauty“ in everything you do.
