Overture Stephen Gunzenhauser / Polish State Philharmonic Orchestra I usually like to relate the art or images to the music somehow either by nationality or thematically, but lately I've been having trouble with 19th century German music. There doesn't seem to be much 19th century German painting available aside from one or two big name artists. So instead for this piece I have chosen some of Lachner's contemporaries from around the world. This piece puzzles me. It has four movements including a Scherzo not unlike a symphony, yet he chose to call it a suite. Is this because the piece doesn't include a lot of development, modulation and other musical acrobatics a symphony might use? It's hard for me to tell on just a few listens. If anyone knows the answer, I'd be interested. One of the nice things about doing these videos is it forces me to listen to a piece several times while previewing and tweaking. I get them nearly memorized which is a nice way to appreciate them more than I might otherwise. I find this one quite satisfying -- pleasing without being trite, and the bombast is kept to a minimum considering the time it was written, 1881. Enjoy!
