Fifty Years Ago, May 6, 1965 - "Suburbia's Longest Night" Two F4 tornadoes ravaged the City of Fridley. A total of 6 tornadoes touched down in the Twin Cities area that night. The first Fridley tornado touched down at 7:06 pm and was on the ground for 7 miles. The second Fridley tornado touched down at 8:14 pm in the City of Golden Valley and was on the ground for 18 miles. It was reported the F4 tornadoes were as wide as 1/2 mile when on the ground. I believe a total of 6 people in Fridley were killed that night. Several people were killed at the Fridley Trailer Court on Central Ave were the trailers were tossed around like tinker toys. The FMC Northern Ordnance Plant in Fridley was hit by both tornadoes. I was nine years old at the time and I remember how green the sky was that unusually warm spring evening and how eerily quiet it was right before the storm hit. I remember going into the basement and listening to the storm reporting on WCCO on a portable radio. We could occasionally here the roar from the tornadoes and storm. Fortunately our house only had some broken windows and tree branches down from our oak trees in the yard. Many of our friends and neighbors were not as fortunate. Most of the schools were damaged or totally destroyed. It took years for the city to recover and rebuild. The attached movie (a little over 3 minutes) is from 8mm film my dad took of the damage to Fridley, MN from those tornadoes. The video includes: 1. National Tea Grocery Store (University Ave and Mississippi Street) 2. Fridley City Hall/Fire/Police Station (University Ave and Mississippi Street) 3. Fridley Hardware 4. Damaged Homes 5. Hayes School Gymnasium (Mississippi Street) 6. Damaged Homes 7. Tree damage in our yard 8. Fridley Trailer Court (Central Ave and 73rd Ave) 9. Fridley Lumber Yard (Central Ave and Osborne Road) 10. Fridley Trailer Court 11. Standard Gas Station (Central Ave and Osborne Road) 12. Sharon's Beauty Shop (her home on Osborne Road was totally leveled) If anyone recognizes where the damaged homes in the video are at, please let me know.
