Gag Reflex involve two cranial Nerves: IX (glossopharyngeal nerve) and X (Vagus nerve)

CN IX senses touch to the posterior throat == relay that information to the CN X to perform it's motor action which is lift off the soft palate and the uvula. If lesion to the CN IX -- patient can't sense == no gag reflex. If lesion to the CN X -- patient unable to move palate and uvula == uvula will deviate to opposite side because of unopposed contraction by the normal side which pulls the uvula towards it. ==================== I tried my best to explain these concepts to the best of my knowledge and made it as simple as possible.
