EVERYTHING IS COMICS AND NOTHING HURTS! Dive into this exciting, complicated, and inviting new world with me! Bear in mind, I am also a beginner. :D Please forgive any mistakes or cock-ups I may make in this journey. Vaughan, Fiona Staples Marvel 1602 - various I also showed but didn't talk about the book I used as an example of a trade, which was Marvel's Civil War (Mark Miller, Steve McNiven). Speaking of Civil War, another thing I didn't mention was events in the Marvel universe. I don't know if the same goes for DC, but Marvel has these events that are kind of the Big Things That Happen, like the superhero Civil War and the Siege of Asgard and the House of M. These are massive events that influence everyone in that universe, and they usually have a main run (like the Civil War trade I showed you), and the comics that are going at the time (like the individual Spider-Man run, Fantastic Four, etc) usually tie into these events. If you start getting deeper into comics, it can help to at least Google what happened in these events, because sometimes they had pretty intense effects on the people involved. Another thing I should mention is the different universes. Again, I don't know about DC, but (from what I can tell) Marvel has two main universes where most of the big shit goes down. Right now that's Earth-616 (which is where pretty much everything happens) and Ultimate universe, which is newer, and I know less about that. The one thing I do know about the Ultimate universe is that Peter Parker died in it, and the new Spider-Man, Miles Morales, is fucking adorable, and you should check him out as well. :D I've got his first trade, but it's back at my parents' house, so I couldn't show you guys. But seriously, he's the cutest guy. Can't help mentioning - Ultimate universe is where the black Nick Fury's at. That was actually the weirdest thing for me, reading all the Earth-616 stuff where Nick Fury is an old white dude. Thankfully, Earth-616 just got its very own version of what I think of as the REAL Nick Fury (no offence to fans of the old white dude) and our very own Agent Phil Coulson! They first appear in Secret Avengers, btw, as if you needed another incentive for buying it. ;D If you have a local comic store, I encourage you to try it out. They're almost never as scary as they're shown on TV and in movies. All the comic stores I've been in have been lovely, with friendly staff who want to help. Don't be afraid to ask for help finding stuff! It can really help to scout around online to get an idea of what you're into. Two of my favourite people for this kind of stuff are flatbear and marchingjaybird on tumblr. You can just Google their names and they pop up. They're super friendly and always willing to answer any questions. Also, flatbear does amazing art, and marchingjaybird writes fabulous fic. They're also married. I have a slight internet crush on both of them. :3 I HOPE I WAS HELPFUL LOVE YOU ALL READ ALL OF THE COMICS WOOOOOOOOO Tumblr: myrmidryad.tumblr.com Twitter: twitter.com/myrmidryad AO3: archiveofourown.org/users/myrmidryad
