Cody' Garbrandt's hands are truly devastating, and you don't really see a lot of people with that style of striking let alone his caliber of power when using it. What is he doing differently? To understanding this, let's take a look at another world champion who is just as unique in his own world. Gennady Golovkin.

Forgotten Instrumental Piano Hip Hop

script: Genedy Golovkin is a 36-0 World Champion and an unadulterated beast who methodically crawled up from the underworld.
His boxing style is a very high risk high reward method of fighting. The entire presmise of his style is to methodically pressure his opponent into an "infight" whilst still remaining calm and methodical. An infight is essentially fighting closer than an arms reach, and if you look at Golovkins primary method of attack, he looks to execute his opponent with the shorter in reach but devastating hooks. Most people can't handle an infight, because of the pressure and fear correlated to the high risk of getting knocked out in one. The excessive pressure causes cortical inhibition or frontal lobe shutdown, which inhibits an individuals ability to properly assess the next best move, while on the contrary, Golvkins mind remains ice cold, granting him clean head movement to address each reaction from his opponent whilst countering with clean hooks.
He Jabs to get a feel for his opponent while slowly pressuring his opponent up against the ropes, or closes the distance by methodically shifting closer. He may also shift stances and hooks mid transition to add power to his engage. He can also slip into a solid counter punches if the opponent lunges forward opposed to away from the infight. Once his opponent is in the infight, he uses head movement and a wide stance resulting in a large pivot range to add more body thus more power into each hook. If you look at the punch itself, it's not a huge range of motion, it's just a clean hook, but the large rotation in his pivet, the amount of body he puts into each punch with a wider stance is why his hook is so devastating. At first glance honest, he looks like the guy from blues clue. Just looking at him, you'd never tell he was a one of the most dangerous men on the planet... This is why I never judge a book by its cover...
Summary of his method. head movement, jab and shift closer to add pressure. counter punch if they engage, or corner and engage infight. Execute in infight with headmovement and hooks. Note, this style doesn't really back away. He believes in his superios head movement and hook power, thus always tries to pressure the infight.
Now, doesn't this sound very similar to cody's up close high risk high reward style? Counter punching or pressuring via shifting into an infight. A wide stance resulting in a huge pivot with incredible head movement and devastating hooks in that infight? It looks very similar to what golovkin does with two key differences. First of course Cody being a mixed martial artist, but second being their states of mind. Golovkin is calm and methodical while cody's mind is calm, but it also has this savagness to it, an instinctive animalistic ferocity. Golokin is calm and clean, Cody calm yet ferocious, much like a spotted leopard creeping in then pouncing on its meal.
