Guardian Ape Exploit?

I was standing very far away from guardian ape after I killed his first phase, and he just stood completely still for around 20 seconds until he got very low. I don't know if this is normal and can be performed perfectly. I sadly started recording right after it happened. (Don't mind my really bad gameplay I have like 20 hours on the game and I'm still re-adjusting)
