You can start metal detecting as a hobby for as little as $44. If you count the cost of your gloves and shovel and a pinpoint detector to add to your main detector it costs only $71. I bought a harbor freight 9 Function detector for $44, a pinpointer for $16, gloves for $2 and a small lightweight shovel for $8. That is all you need to start. Total is $71. You don't really need a pinpointer, but it is a help for those who are just starting out, and if you have kids, gives each one of them something to do when detecting and makes it a whole lot more fun for them.
The 9 Function detector is not the best detector, but it is a bargain for the price. The next best detector available on the market is the Garrett Ace 250 which costs over $220. Check the reviews on harbor freight and the video reviews on YouTube.
I added several review videos of the detector in my playlist on metal detectors.
