Habituated Elephants

These two female elephants are freely living in a sanctuary. If they choose to leave they will be tagged. Both have a guard with them 24 hours a day to avoid poaching which, unfortunately, happens too often. Dirk, the main caretaker offers an occasiional interaction to help with the resources needed to care for these animals. He is trying to work with the government to get a license for a permanent sanctuary and invite school children in order to propmote understanding of thier neighboring animals. That evening Dirk went into the hospital with Malaria. Location is the Ndarakwai Ranch in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro.
