Handy Homework - Using Base 10 for making numbers

This video shows how we can start using Base 10 rods and unit cubes for simpy making numbers. It shows how children can start with just the unit cubes and then progress onto using the 10s rods as well. This equipment really helps children to form a strong understanding of how numbers can be made up of tens and units. It also helps them to understand the value of digits e.g. for 13, the digit 1 actually stands for a 10 whereas the 3 means just 3 units. Although Base 10 equipment is often used for children in year 2, we believe this video demonstrates how much younger children can start to use the rods and unit cubes to simply form numbers. This can be devloped further by getting children to compare numbers...'which is the biggest number?' 'Which is the smallest number?' 'Can you make this number the same as the other one?'...Great fun!
