Heliand and the Band – Nico Muhly's "Reliable Sources" featuring Rachael Elliott, bassoon

Heliand and the Band perform Nico Muhly's "Reliable Sources" for bassoon and wind ensemble. In this monumental new piece, Muhly turns to a 'reliable source' of his, the English Renaissance composer Orlando Gibbons, whose keyboard work "The Lord of Salisbury, His Pavan" serves as harmonic fodder for Muhly's variations. Eventually, the Pavan tune itself is heard in the final chorale, played by the bassoons and bass clarinet in a particular moment of glory.
