The composer having gone to consult a doctor about a violent muscle spasm which had doubled one leg back at the knee, this doctor brutally urged an immediate amputation which he expected to carry out at once. Cowell stalked home indignantly on his crutches, his anger translating itself immediately into this music in his head; he set it down right away just as it had come to him. Folkways Records 1963
